Day trip to Monhegan Island, Maine, USA
As our time in Maine came to an end, we checked out of our first stay today. We decided to take a boat out to Monhegan Island today. Monhegan is a small island in Maine that is 0.7 miles in width and 1.7 miles in length, and it boasts about the beautiful cliffs and wildlife. The island has a wide array of trails to hike on as well!
We went to Port Clyde to board at around 6:15 AM. Boarding begins 15 minutes before departure. During the summer months, departure begins at 7 AM, 12:30 PM, and 3:30 PM. The boat ride is about an hour long.

We arrived at Monhegan and got coffee and some croissants at The Barnacle. The Barnacle is a well known cafe/bakery that serves coffee made at the Monhegan Coffee Roasters here right on the island! We had a meat croissant and a chocolate croissant, both of them were ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. We actually think about them quite often.

We hiked on trail #1 which is the main trail in Monhegan that goes around the ENTIRE island, being around 4.5 miles of trails. We walked passed the small village and saw so many beautiful sights in just 15 minutes of being here!
A special highlight of our day was: We met an old couple that asked us for directions as we are finishing the trail around the island, and had a good chat with them about traveling. They have been coming to the island for 30 years now and they stated that the island has not changed much AT ALL! Along our way we saw some blueberries on the trails and had a small snack!
We continued our hike to get back to the other side of the village. Total hike was about 5.5 miles with just BEAUTIFUL views.

We made it back to Monhegan Brewing Company. Because this was such a small island with only a handful of shops, everyone was gathered around here! Oliver and I each ordered a flight that came in 4, 7oz pours. Out of all the breweries we have visited in Maine, in our opinion, this brewery had the best tasting beer. It's a very small brewery, so they only had 5 or 6 beers on tap. Usually breweries tend to have a certain type of beer that stands our above the rest. However we really enjoyed each style that they offered! From the IPA's, the sours and the smokey porter. All of their beer was fantastic!

We ended our island day trip with a scoop of ice cream from the Novelty and awaited out boat to take us back to Port Clyde.
*tip: watch out for all the poison ivy on the trails! This is how I tried not to touch any poison ivy:
**Highly recommend taking a day trip out here, or even stay here for one night.
