7 Unique Must Try foods to try in the New England area
Seven unique must try foods in New England! Here it goes!
Fluff
Also known as the marshmallow fluff, this super simple spread is made from corn syrup, simple syrup, vanilla, and egg whites. The fluff holds some great traditions here up in the northeast. It was first made in the town of Lynn, Massachusetts. Now, in Somerville, Massachusetts they hold an annual festival at the Union Square called 'What the Fluff?'. This brand is used to make the.. the Fluffernutter.
The Fluffernutter
My coworker from Maine made me this because I have never tried it before! Essentially it is like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, however you replace the jam for fluff! It is so good, if you love marshmallows and peanut butter. It’s actually the perfect snack when you need some sugar! The Fluffer Nutter is also called the official sandwich of Massachusetts (I do not think this is official but, they have seen bills filed from the state representative some years back).
The Whoopie Pie
Probably my favorite one out of this list, is the Whoopie pie. There are four states that claim that they “own” the Whoopie pie: Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania claims that the Amish created it and Maine states that Labadie’s bakery created back in the early 1920s. In 2011, Whoopie pies were declared the official treat of Maine and there is an annual Maine Whoopie pie Festival in the small town of Dover Foxcroft.
Maine actually holds the record for making the largest Whoopie pie… 1,067 POUNDS. The classic will be pie is a chocolate cake with a vanilla flavored frosting in between. It almost looks like a blown up Oreo! There are different flavors and combinations that came about over time, popular choices are: chocolate peanut butter, chocolate chip, Red Velvet, and pumpkin.
Red hots or AKA snappers
Red hearts or also known as snappers, are particularly famous in New England because the house dogs are really really red. Apparently they use the red 40 dye in order to make these hotdogs very bright.
Pickled Wrinkles
Pickled Wrinkles are an old Downeast Maine Delicacy. They are large carnivorous sea snails, or whelks, which are pickled and canned. Lobstermen find wrinkles in the lobster traps they bring up from the ocean floor. In tough times, pickled wrinkles were relied on to help feed Maine families throughout the winter. There was only one restaurant around Maine that I have found that serves these wrinkles. They are chewy... nothing fabulous, but for sure worth a try!
The Maine Lobster
The Maine Lobster, not rock lobster! The main difference (haha, get it?) from Maine to rock lobster is the claw. The claw of the Maine lobster has so much more meat and it is so much more sweet and tender. The Maine lobster is so much more superior to the rock lobster. If you travel in Maine, you will see a bunch of cute lobster shacks where you can bring your own drinks and order a lobster or a lobster roll. It is one of the best things to experience here in Maine. IT IS SO GOOD!
Moxie
The Moxie is the first mass produced soft drink in the United States! It was first produced in 1876 in Lowell, Massachusetts. The Moxie drink is still an extremely popular drink here in New England and it is also the official soft drink of Maine since 2005. It tastes like a semi fizzy root beer with a slightly bitter finish!
These are not ranked by how tasty or how good they are. They are just a list of interesting things to try in the New England area if you are traveling around the USA.
